How to clean pleated blinds

Two green plisse blinds on tilt and turn windows next to a stylish bed

Caring for your Luxaflex® pleated blinds helps them look beautiful and perform as they should for years to come. Whether you have Plissé blinds or Duette® blinds, the right approach makes all the difference. These fabrics are thoughtfully engineered and deserve gentle, considered care rather than heavy handed cleaning.

This guide explains how to clean pleated blinds safely at home, when a deeper clean may be appropriate, and when it’s best to speak to a professional.

Everyday care for Luxaflex® pleated blinds

Regular light cleaning is the most effective way to keep pleated blinds in great condition. The fabrics used in Luxaflex® Duette® and Plissé blinds are fixed securely into the headrail and bottom rail and cannot be removed.

To prevent dust from settling into the pleats, clean your blinds frequently using a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner set to a low suction setting. Always support the blind while cleaning and work gently along the pleats rather than across them.

This simple routine reduces the need for more intensive cleaning later on.

Removing small marks and stains

If you notice a stain, act quickly. Fresh marks are far easier to remove than older ones.

Use a soft sponge and lukewarm water. If needed, add a small amount of mild, non synthetic detergent. Dab the affected area carefully and avoid rubbing, which may damage the structure of the fabric or flatten the pleats.

Allow the blind to dry naturally before raising it again.

Important: Duette® and Plissé fabrics with a metallic backing should never be cleaned with water. Moisture can damage the metallic coating and affect the appearance of the blind. For these fabrics, stick to dry cleaning only.

Deep cleaning pleated and plissé blinds

In some cases, a deeper clean may be suitable. Non metallic Plissé fabrics and coated Duette® and Plissé fabrics can be submerged carefully, along with the bottom rail. This does not apply to blackout fabrics, which should not be immersed.

If you’re considering a full clean, take your time and follow a careful approach. Fill a bath or large basin with lukewarm water at around 30 degrees and add a small amount of non synthetic detergent. Lay the fabric into the water while keeping the headrail above the surface. This is particularly important for motorised blinds.

For best results, allow the pleats to open rather than keeping them bundled together, helping to prevent creasing or distortion. Gently clean any remaining marks using a soft sponge or brush and never leave the fabric submerged for longer than two hours.

Once cleaned, rinse thoroughly by spray cleaning the fabric front and back to remove any soap residue. Carefully compress the pleats, reinstall the blind, and allow it to drop fully so the fabric can dry evenly. Gradually raise and lower the blind during the drying process to help the pleats return to their original shape.

This method forms part of more advanced cleaning pleated blinds care and may not be suitable for all installations.

When to call in the experts

If your blind is wider than your bath or you’re unsure about the fabric type, professional cleaning is the safest option. A window covering specialist can assess your blind and recommend the most appropriate care method without risking damage.

At authorised Luxaflex® showrooms, you’ll find expert advice and professional services available, not only for cleaning guidance but also for measuring, installation and long term care.

What to avoid when cleaning pleated blinds

To protect your blind and maintain its refined finish, avoid soaking blackout fabrics, using harsh chemicals, scrubbing the pleats or applying excessive pressure. Steam cleaners and abrasive tools should also be avoided, as they can permanently damage the fabric structure.

Luxaflex® pleated blinds are designed to elevate everyday living through beautiful fabrics and considered engineering. With the right care, they’ll continue to soften light, enhance privacy and shape the atmosphere of your home.
