Keep your home naturally light and private

It is possible to take control of your home environment and regulate both light and privacy, wherever you live. There are ways to let light in without it being glaringly bright or compromising your privacy.

Equally as important; there are ways to keep light out and ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, even with bright security or street lights nearby.

Here, we’ll showcase some of the ways you can regulate light in your home and explore its importance to health and wellbeing.

Say Hello To The Sun

Our biological clock is controlled by daylight. To feel alert, it’s important to have exposure to light upon waking and see natural light as soon as possible. Even on a cloudy day, natural light can have a big impact on our wellbeing.

There are countless ways to allow natural light to easily enter your home, and if you work from home this is particularly important – Harvard Business Review reports a correlation between natural light, productivity and profitability.

“Workers spend on average 5 hours and 42 minutes at their desk each day. Having access to natural light can have a bottom-line impact on [...] work performance, wellbeing and engagement.”

Natural light also helps your home look its best, making spaces appear bigger and brighter. Allowing light and warmth from the sun into your home can even reduce heating costs thanks to solar gain. And your plants will thank you!

What Are The Health Benefits Associated With Natural Light?

  • It boosts Vitamin D, which prevents bone loss and reduces the risk of heart disease, weight gain and cancers
  • It can ward off seasonal depression
  • It improves natural sleep patterns
  • Too little daylight can lead to a disturbed daily rhythm, poor sleep, and associated consequences for your mood and wellbeing
  • It’s a good idea to take a short walk in the fresh air and sunshine each day

Rise And Shine

Smart blinds can be programmed to gradually open in the morning, waking you with gentle natural light and getting your day started in a peaceful and motivating way. Our PowerView Automation® app can coordinate the opening of your blinds with sunrise in your local area.

Choose Your Transparency

When thinking about new blinds, you might focus on the material, the pattern and the colour, but you should also consider the thickness and light permeability of the material.

With most Luxaflex® window coverings you can choose from three types of fabric: transparent, semi-transparent and room darkening.

With our Plissé Shades and Roller Blinds you can choose from no fewer than four transparency options (transparent, semi-transparent, translucent or room darkening).

LightLine® Roller Blinds LightLine® Roller Blinds

Screen Time

For home offices and media rooms, you can significantly minimise glare and reduce eyestrain by controlling natural light with Roller Blinds. Their clean lines and classic look make them versatile enough for any room including the office.

Our Roller Blinds feature beautiful textures and designs that complement a range of décor styles. And the choice of light-filtering sheer fabrics means you can easily reduce glare when needed.

Luxaflex® LightLine® Roller Blinds are made of a semi-transparent fabric: a mix of polyester and polypropylene. The fabric ensures that daylight is dimmed and privacy is protected. The material is resistant to moisture and is therefore ideal for humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, where privacy is particularly important.

Not Too Bright

While it is important to let in natural light, it is also advisable to block harsh UV rays which can not only be dazzling and distracting, but can also damage furniture and fade flooring.

Revolutionary Pirouette® ClearView® fabric provides variable light control and a stunning clear view to the outside world while transforming the light inside into a comforting glow. The exclusive design of Pirouette® Shades mean they block up to 81% of harmful UV rays with the vanes open and 99% with vanes closed, helping to protect and extend the life of your furnishings.

Automated blind options mean you can programme your window and door coverings to lower automatically during the brightest part of the day, even when you’re not there. This is particularly useful for protecting your home in the summer while you’re away on holiday.

Day and Night Shades Day and Night Shades

Day and Night Blinds

The ideal solution for every room, Duette® Day and Night window coverings feature a blackout and sheer fabric in one shade. This helps reduce incoming light from disturbing the whole family whilst sleeping, and during the day, softly filters the light - great for multipurpose rooms.

Another advantage of Duette® Shades is your home stays warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and insulated all year round.

Why is darkness as important as daylight?

A dark bedroom is important for a good night’s sleep. Too much light in the bedroom disrupts the sleep rhythm and is detrimental to sleep quality. Our body clock relies on light and darkness as cues to tell our bodies when it’s time to wake up or go to sleep. When it’s dark, we release melatonin (the hormone that helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm), which relaxes us ready for sleep.

Good room darkening blinds can keep a room at least 90% dark.
