Getting Your Baby To Sleep Through The Night

  • Tips

A new baby in the house is a wonderful, and exhausting thing. Most new parents at some point pour over books on baby sleep training, wondering ‘how to get my baby to sleep through the night’. The reasons can vary as baby grows and sleep patterns change, but the bit parents can control, is making the nursery conducive to a good night’s rest (for everyone).

Start with the Hard Stuff

Babies are expensive and helpful friends and family may offer to pass on cots and furniture to help out.

A cot frame is fine but anything that may have suffered wear and tear needs to be replaced; a second-hand cot mattress may have been compressed by a heavier baby, making it less comfortable and less effective in the war on restless nights.

Cot mattresses come in great variety from pocket sprung, spring interior, and a foam interior mattress, so do try out which feels right for your little one.

Get the Temperature Right

Being too hot or too cold can prevent even the sleepiest little person from sleeping through the night.

A temperature monitor will let you know if the room is between the safety guidelines of 16-20 C. Baby sleeping bags are a popular way to ensure baby doesn’t kick off their covers, but many don’t have arms; on chillier nights add in a soft cardigan to keep them cosy.

If your child’s room is south facing it could get very warm resulting in restless sleep for the little ones.

Our room darkening Duette® blinds not only aid sleep but can help to regulate the temperature of the room - keeping bedrooms cosy and warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer. Invaluable for the whole household.

Remove the Distractions

A nice bold wall mural can help your child focus and gently entertain, but other elements such as light pollution from street lights, breaking dawn, or even a tiny red power dot on an electronic device can disrupt sleep.

For babies and small children's rooms, room darkening blinds with a child-friendly roller blind range are a great choice. Our child-safe systems will help to help you rest easier too. Some children are also irritated by tags in clothing so cut out anything that may annoy super soft skin.

Set the Mood

Your baby needs to learn that nighttime is different from day time and that there are different expectations. A bedtime routine will help.

After a calm bath, draw the window blinds whatever the season, and speak in softer, hushed tones. A baby massage, a favourite baby blanket or soft toy, and a gentle nursery rhyme song you use each night will give them the cue that it’s time to sleep.

Don’t Panic

Babies are individuals and are totally unique; what’s normal for one won’t be for another.

Use sleeping patterns for your child’s age as guidance but don’t be worried if your child doesn’t always adhere to it. Trying not to worry is the best way for everyone to get some sleep. And relax…
