How to clean venetian blinds

Black venetian blinds in full height kitchen dining room windows

Venetian blinds are designed to bring structure, light and rhythm to a room. With the right care, Luxaflex® venetian blinds will continue to look refined and perform beautifully for years to come. Whether your blinds are aluminium or wood, gentle regular cleaning is the key to keeping them at their best.

This guide explains how to clean venetian blinds safely at home, from everyday dusting to dealing with heavier build up.

Everyday care for Luxaflex® venetian blinds

Routine cleaning helps prevent dust and grease from settling on the slats. Start by fully lowering the blind and tilting the slats closed.

Using a feather duster, a short haired brush or a soft, dry cloth, gently remove dust from each slat. Working from the top-down helps stop dust falling onto areas you’ve already cleaned. Turning the slats the opposite way and repeating the process ensures both sides are cleaned evenly.

For a slightly deeper clean, a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment can be used on the lowest suction setting. Always support the blind as you clean to avoid putting strain on the ladder tapes and cords.

Cleaning more heavily soiled slats

If your venetian blinds are particularly dirty, a damp cloth can be used. Lightly moisten a soft cloth with water and gently wipe along each slat. Avoid using excessive moisture, especially around the headrail.

Larger areas can be lightly spray cleaned, but it’s important to let the blind dry fully afterwards. Take extra care to ensure the steel headrail is completely dry, as lingering moisture can increase the risk of rust.

This approach is suitable for more thorough cleaning venetian blinds care without being overly aggressive on the materials.

Material specific advice

Different materials benefit from slightly different care.

Aluminium venetian blinds are resilient and well suited to gentle damp cleaning, provided excess water is avoided. Wooden venetian blinds should only ever be cleaned using dry methods, such as dusting or vacuuming, as moisture can cause the slats to warp or discolour.

If you’re unsure which material your Luxaflex® venetian blinds are made from, your local dealer can advise.

Professional cleaning for venetian blinds

For blinds that are heavily soiled or difficult to clean at home, professional cleaning may be the best option. Specialist cleaning companies can clean venetian blinds using ultrasonic treatment systems, which remove dirt effectively while being gentle on the blind structure.

This is particularly useful for large installations or blinds in kitchens and commercial style spaces where grease and airborne particles build up more quickly.

What to avoid when cleaning venetian blinds

To protect the finish and mechanism of your blind, avoid abrasive sponges, harsh cleaning products, soaking the slats or allowing water to sit inside the headrail. Steam cleaners should also be avoided, as heat and moisture can damage components over time.

Thoughtful care, made to last

Luxaflex® venetian blinds are crafted with precision and attention to detail, designed to complement everyday living. With simple, regular care, they’ll continue to shape light and add character to your space.
