How to clean wooden blinds

Close up view of brown Wood Venetian blinds

Wooden blinds bring warmth, texture and character to a space. With the right care, Luxaflex® wooden blinds will continue to look beautifully crafted and refined for years to come. Because wood is a natural material, gentle and regular cleaning is far more effective than occasional heavy cleaning.

This guide explains how to clean wooden blinds safely at home, what to avoid, and how to keep the wood finish looking its best.

Everyday care for Luxaflex® wooden blinds

Regular dusting is the most important part of caring for wooden blinds. Luxaflex® wooden venetian blinds are finished with a protective lacquer coating, making them easier to maintain when cleaned little and often.

Fully lower the blind and tilt the slats closed. Using a soft, clean cloth, a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, gently remove dust from each slat. Work from the top down to prevent dust settling on areas you’ve already cleaned.

Turning the slats the opposite way and repeating the process helps ensure both sides are evenly cleaned without stressing the ladder tapes or cords.

Dealing with heavier dirt on wooden blinds

If some slats are particularly dirty, a lightly damp cloth can be used. Wipe gently along the length of the slat and avoid excess moisture at all times.

Detergents, sprays and chemical cleaners are not recommended, as they can strip the lacquer finish or discolour the wood over time. Once cleaned, allow the slats to dry fully before tilting or raising the blind.

This approach supports safe cleaning wooden blinds care without compromising the natural beauty of the wood.

Why moisture matters with wood blinds

Wood reacts differently to moisture than other materials. Excess damp can cause slats to warp, swell or crack, permanently altering the appearance of the blind.

For this reason, wooden blinds should never be soaked, spray cleaned heavily or steam cleaned. Kitchens and bathrooms may require more frequent dry dusting due to airborne grease or humidity, but water based cleaning should still be kept to an absolute minimum.

Understanding how to clean wood blinds correctly is key to protecting both the finish and the structure of the blind.

Professional cleaning and long term care

If your wooden blinds are heavily soiled or you’re unsure how to treat a particular mark, professional advice is recommended. A window covering specialist can assess the condition of the blind and advise on safe cleaning or refurbishment options.

Your local Luxaflex® dealer can also offer guidance on ongoing care and help you explore replacement options if your space or lifestyle has changed.

What to avoid when cleaning wooden blinds

To protect the finish and structure of your blind, avoid harsh cloths, abrasive sponges, chemical cleaners and prolonged contact with water. Steam cleaners should never be used on wooden blinds, as heat and moisture can cause irreversible damage.

These precautions are essential when cleaning wood blinds made from natural materials.
